THE VICIOUS BOOK OF BBS'S
By EverClear, alias Dan Vishnesky
08.11.94
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?
You may be wondering what this monsterous file which you
have just discovered is. Well, this is the Vicious Book of BBS's,
an online travel guide to the vast and exciting world of internet
bulliten board services. Think of this as your personal map to
the internet: A tool you use to decide where to go and what to
do when you get there. Inside you will find a sort of "highlights
guide" that can help you get to what you want fast. If you are
looking for a certain bbs, look under the BBS Lists section. If
you are looking for a certain type of bbs or certain feature, look
under the Services heading. If you just want to do a little sight-
seeing, look under the Highlights section. Also included is a
brief introduction to the different types of bbs's and how they work.
Use this file however you want. You can print it, distribute
it, burn it, or toss it in the trash, I dont care. Just dont try
to get money for the damn thing or try to say you wrote it. Dont
go adding your own stuff in and passing it off as an original. This
is my idea, and my work. I hope everyone enjoys it.
LOGGING IN ON A NEW BBS
Logging into a different bbs can be difficult at times and
sometimes even a chore. The first thing you need to do is telnet
to the site and enter in whatever login name you are provieded
with. Sometimes you may be presented with a password to use. But
once you get this set up, you have a new task. How do you get an
account?
The process is usually very simple. Most bbs's will tell
you right when you login how to enter for a new account. On some
you will type in new, others you type in guest. Just follow the
instructions given to you. On a freenet, you may have to login as
a guest and then fill out some kind of online registration. On
some boards you may have to obtain a form of some kind. When in
doubt, consult this document. I have tried to do the best I could
to ensure that you have some type of information to go by when things
get hazy. Once you register a new account, you may have to undergo
some kind of validation sceme.
VALIDATION
Most bbs's require some type of validtaion, whether it be
simply entering in you pertinent data, emailing some kind of form,
or even sending them a release of some type via real mail. Whenever
applying for a new account, use patience. Some bbs's may require you
to wait a small period of time before you can gain full access.
Others require you to send them something. But most are usually
quick and effortless. Again, as stated above, if you need some kind
of advice on how to get validated, consult this document and look
under the heading for that bbs. You should get information that is
valuable enough and easy to understand.
TYPES OF BBS'S
There exist today three major types of bbs's. The first
of these is the Eagles BBS style. Modeled after the Eagles' Nest
BBS style, this kind of bulliten board is the simplest to understand
and easiest to use. An Eagles' BBS, or more commonly EBBS, is based
on a series of menus. These menus take up the full scope of the
screen and are usually topped off by a command prompt at the top of
the scree. This command prompt displays one word, such as Help,
Select, or New. The word displayed is the active command. To
activate it, all you would have to do is press enter. To call up a
new command, all you have to do is type the corresponding letter
for that command and it will appear active on the command prompt.
Take for example the command 'Help'. To activate 'Help', you would
first type in 'H', then press enter. At this point the command
would execute, and in this case you would recieve a list of commands
that you had the option of using. Get very acquainted with the
help or h command, because when you come on to a new board, you won't
know what kinds of things this board has to offer unless you activate
help. Some bbs's offer different options than others, so use help
whenever you first login.
EBBS's offer two main types of conversation: Chat and Talk.
Talk is the simplest. Talk allows you to chat one on one with a
specific user online. This function is cool if you want to talk to
one single person individually and without interruption. When talking
no one can interrupt your conversation, nor can anyone see what you are
saying. On the other hand, you cant tell what is going on outside the
talk session either. Chat is a more extended version of talk. In chat,
many users can converse at a single time. You can also show actions in
a chat session as well.
As far as other types of messaging go, EBBS's offer what are
called "boards", or topical areas of interest at which one may post
his or her thoughts on the topic. Boards can be accessed, read, and
posted upon. You can read what other people have posted about the
topic, reply to that post, or develop a thought of your own. Boards
work well because they allow you to go to one topic and stay on it,
without losing your concentration. Some EBBS's also offer flie servers
that allow you to access a number of downloadable files. And the
really cool ones offer access to other Internet services such as
bbs's, mudds, gophers, WWW homepages, and more.
The next major type of bbs is a Citadel. Citadel style boards
work on a prompt line rather than a menu system. Still used is the
concept of hot keys, which are more preavalent here than on an EBBS.
Citadel offers a different kind of system. Instead of individual
boards, you have rooms which you access through a Jump command. This
command is commonly associated with the <j> key. You press <j> and
then enter the name of the room you want. Instead of clearing the
screen for each post, the messages scroll the screen, causing a chain
reaction style movement. You don't reply to posts in the fashion that
you do in an EBBS, rather you just post and in the message direct any
personal comments you wish.
Instead of chat and talk servers, Citadel style bbs's offer
Express Messages. These are real time messages that magically appear
on your screen at any time. With this option, you can carry on a
personal conversation with many people at one time. You talk to them,
they talk to you, but they don't talk to each other. It is an inter-
esting concept that adds a new dimension to a bbs.
Some Citadels offer different functions with a subsystem
command. This command allows you to access the computer itself and
perform jobs such as fingers and telnets.
The third and final type of bbs is an extension on a Citadel.
It is called a DOC, or Dave's Own Citadel. This style of Citadel
offers a quicker moving database and more enhanced options. You
basically get more out of a DOC than you do out of a Citadel. Most
of the commands are the same, you still Jump, etc. But some options
are more powerful. You can send better x messages for one. DOC is
the big deal right now, because it is so user friendly and powerful.
On both a DOC and Citadel you can use the <?> command to get
a full list of all options available to you. Get the hang of doing
this often, because if you don't you won't know what the hell you are
able to do. :)

***The Ultimate Tour***
This is a list of places you just got to see. If
you follow this trip guide, you will see some really cool stuff
and some fun times as well.
Start off at Eagles' Nest. This is a major spot, cause this is
where ebbs got started. Check out the boards like Rush Limbaugh
and Alcohol. Get a feel for the system here. You may even want
to check out the files or the College Football Scores Server....
Make your way on over to Quartz. This is where Citadel, and
eventually DOC, got its fame. Look around here, it is neat, and
get the hang of the system here. You may have trouble at first,
but once you have it down, you can move on......
To ISCA. Biggest userbase around. Great place to get to meet
your first real net friends. The people you can meet here will
surprise you.
Once you have gotten this far, you are familiar with the main
types of bbs's. :)
- Take a trip to Shadow. This is a neat DOC cause they have
color and all sorts of stuff. When you get here, you
have to visit Chit Chat>
- While you are out that way, go to HELLUVA and check all
around the rooms. Its groovy.....
- Gotta visit Taz's House. He's planning on going down soon. :(
- Catch a flight to Skynet: This place may be off access to
anyone out of Scandinavia soon so you might want to see
what is happening out there. This is the premiere
overseas board.
- Help de-virginize Flux, The Dragon's Lair, and Resus.
- Take the elevator to the 9th Floor. You might think everyone is
high up there the way they act :)
- No trip is complete without a freenet or two. The best ones to
get on are Freenet Finland, Alachua Free-net, and
The Denver Free-Net.
- See M-Net or Grex. Great online service at no charge, with
email and all the fixings.
- Don't forget a chat or two!
- You have just got to see the doors option at The New Hellenic
bbs. It rocks. And see the one at ReachOUT, too.
These are the cream of the crop.
- Post at Auggie BBS and get known by a few users.
- Better stop back at ISCA again! You waited for the key,
might as well make it worth the wait. :)
- What better way to end your trip with a stop at Apocalypse.

This is one new, somewhat unknown bbs that I think anyone
who is into humor and meeting interesting individuals should try.
The 9th Floor is a bbs dedicated to speaking the unheard of, being
mor of the wall than anyone has been yet. The place is sheer
madness and it is sheer fun. The sysop Techs is a hilarous character
who seems to fit right into the woodwork here. They have boards
called Beadworld, Braindump, and Anonymous (all posts are anon).
There are also wide scope boards for Music, Movies, and Games, which
lend a more abstract side to the subject. Right now there are only
45 registered users and 10 boards, with lots of area left to grow.
The 9th Floor is wacky, yet undeniably fun and a great place to kick
back and say what you never thought you'd say before. There is even
an option to see the last 20 logoff (that's right logOFFs not last
20 users to log on)! I think anyone with a taste for humor must try
this bbs out and see how it works. To get registered, you need to
get a copy of the application from finger bbs@leccata.nmsu.edu and
mail it to the address it tells you to. To get the form, finger the
above address and either screen caputre it, print it, or copy it
freehand. You'll see from the form that the 9th Floor is one wacky
place. Don't be alarmed, though, it took only a minute for me to get
validated.
Advanced Technology Information Network

Type: Menu Driven
This is more like a freenet than anything. This is the
information server for the AITN. You can get weahter reports,
agriculture reports, and download or upload files.
Agora Telematica
Host: agora.stm.it
Numeric: 192.106.239.3
Direct Link
Verification: Send Identification
Type: Conference system
Agora offers a large amount of boards and information areas.
To get access to them you must go through a painful validation
procedure that requires you to either mail or fax a copy of your ID
to the bbs. For more info, log on and follow the 'new' prompts.
AKCS Public Access
Host: gateway.mcs.com
Numeric: 192.160.127.100

Login 2: bbs

Type: Menu shell
This is a huge conference server. It offers chat and a myraid
of conferences to its users. Conferences here are mostly linked to
USENET news, but there are a lot here and you can read all day long.
You can also chat with others who are online.
Apocalypse BBS
Host: pluto.cc.umr.edu
Numeric: 131.151.37.37
Login: bbs
Verification: Email
Type: EBBS
Apocalypse BBS is one of the more protected boards on the
bbs, and one of the more interesting ones as well. Coming from the
University of Missouri-Rolla, this board is one of the more
thoughtful places on the internet. Apocalypse has a great selection
of boards. They have racy sex boards, wild and off the wall
dicussion boards, and generally random boards. There are 28 boards
here to choose from.
The chat system is pretty cool, the lobby being called Chaos
and all. Apocalypse generally draws a more eclectic and eccentric
crowd of users. The people you meet here are lively and fun, and
generally worth a good chat or two. Apocalypse is an all around cool
bbs with some rather unique characteristics.
Getting in here is the tough part. You have to email to the
sysops all of your pertinent information. To get a copy of the new
account information, finger bbs@pluto.cc.umr.edu and you will get all
the info you need.

This is a Korean bbs using Korean characters. I dont think
that they are accepting any new accounts at this time (I dont know for
sure because I cant read Korean text). I never have logged in here so
you might want to try this one out. Maybe you will have more success
than I did.
Asimov BBS
Host: asimov.mty.itesm.mx
Numeric: 131.178.52.50

Type: EBBS
Another EBBS board that is Spanish speaking. This one has
a really neat intro scree, but again, most of the users here speak
Spanish as a first language, so all the boards are posted in that
language.
Auggie BBS ***
Host: bbs.augsburg.edu
Numeric: 141.224.128.4
Login: bbs
Verification: Menu Option
Type: EBBS
This is one of the most popular EBBS sites in the world.
Lots of users here, and lots of things to see. Currently handing
71 boards, Auggie has shades of being a technical bbs with the
amount of specialized tech boards it has. But Auggie also has
a warm side to it, with boards for love, friendship, and the
Auggie Family Tree.
Being so active, Auggie is a cool place to come to when
you want to start an interesting chat session or just want someone
to talk to. Even in the late hours you can find someone there.
Also, board activity is rather lively, which makes each trip to
Auggie interesting. Auggie is much a social board, and if you
like the EBBS style of board, it well worth putting on your list
of places to go, if you haven't already done so. Unfortuately,
Auggie is full right now, so to get validated you will have to
wait a while.

This bbs has both Finnish and English script in it. Figuring
out what each command does can be a confusing concept to grasp at the
start. To get a list of commands type '?' at any prompt. This will
give you an English text telling you all the commands availabe and
their uses. This is even more difficult as you get off the beaten
path. Unless you know the language, you find it hard to read or
understand much of anything on this bbs. More inclined to the
international user, Box is a good place to go if you want to meet
some of our friendly co-habitants of the planet Earth.
Brinta BBS
Host: brinta.ptf.hro.nl
Numeric: 145.24.149.50
Login: bbs
Verification: Online
Type: DOC
Here is another overseas board that is getting to be huge.
Brinta has over 6000 users and a large amount of information to
be exchanged. There is a large number of international appeal with
this bbs, and so if you like to meet the rest of the world, Brinta
is your place.
Brinta has 76 rooms, and new ones are coming up every day.
In typical European style, Brinta has lots of places to go to see
the kind of stuff that is rare in the States. There are rooms
called The Underground, The NetSex House, Sex Discussions and
Techniques, Erotic Stories, and loads of language and ethnic rooms.
Brinta allows you to send "feelings" to a user as well. You can
smile, hug, kiss, sigh, grin, and so forth with the * option. This
allows you to show the other person feelings as well as words. Most
people just do something like "*hug*" on other bbs's, but on Brinta
you don't have to.
Brinta is getting pretty busy right now and the sysops are
asking for donations of $5 to help pay for system upgrades. Help out
if you can, we'd hate to see another bbs go down due to financial
problems!

This is a Taiwanese bbs with some English tossed it. A
nice place if you speak the language, but damn hard to understand
if you don't. You won't like it unless you do.
Dislearn BBS
Numeric: 128.86.8.7
Login: See Below
Type: Menu Driven
The Distance Learning network is a server that has access to
a library of thousands of international schools and degree programs.
If you are shopping for post-secondary education or want to see what
other places have to offer, you should check out this server. To get
in, at the login prompt type 'janet' and press enter for the password.
This should give you a "Hostname:" prompt. Here is where you type
'uk.ac.open.acs.vax'. You will then be given another prompt, this
time a "Username:" prompt, and at this point you type 'com_learn'.
This series of commands will give you a menu driven by hot keys. A
good place to catch up on what is out there.
Dolphin BBS
Host: dolphin.csudh.edu
Numeric: 155.135.16.1
Login: bbs
Verification: Menu Option
Type: EBBS
This is a rad bbs. There are lots of options to be explored
with this bbs. There is an online menu that allows you to access
the Dolphin Mud, a gopher, a Mosaic, and two low level games,
TicTacToe and the Puzzle game. You can also access a huge files
system from this bbs as well, with downloadable files in areas such
as games, programming, and computer security. All this and the
usual features associated with a EBBS system.
The file transfer system gives you access to a large set of
files that cover all aspects of computing, with 21 general areas such
as bbs software, QuickMail software, games, mudd stuff, and so on.
And there is alot of stuff there. It is nice to have the file server
and the bbs all in one set of commands. Power at your fingertips....
Dolphin is loaded with cool boards as well. It has alot of
sensitive stuff that most places are to afraid to have. Dolphin has
a Hackers board, a few steamy sex boards, and even an AntiReligion
board. This place tends to break the boundaries of net etiquitte
quite often.
The administration promises to process all new account
requests within 24 hours of their date of application, so getting
registered on Dolphin is easy, and well worth the wait. This place
rocks, don't pass it up.

This is not Sunset BBS. The Dragon's Lair is a brand new
bbs spawned off the desire for a replacement for Sunset. This one is
currently under development and does not offer many rooms or options
quite yet. There are no express messages or chat systems, so users
basically communicate through posts. As is the case with most new
bbs's, the big room here is suggestions. New users can have a stake
in forming this new bbs and how it works. Current rooms offer a
liberal setting with a babble room, LGB, Ireland, etc. Not much tech
stuff here. This one needs to grow a little before one can decide
whether or not to become a regualr user.

Delft University BBS is mainly an ftp server with an added
chat function for good measure. Users can post on boards to talk
to other users. There are alot of download areas here, and that is
the only real feature of DUBBS. Most of the info and menu commands
are written in Dutch so users with background in the language should
feel right at home. If you don't have the background, you'll be lost
for a while. Definitely not the best place for chat.

This is another popular EBBS board. Eagles' Nest BBS has a
wide variety of boards, covering many broads specrums such as sports,
computers, love, etc. But this bbs also has its share specialized
boards. There is a Rush Limbaugh room, a room all about Alcohol, and
Pizza. This bbs has 51 boards to choose from, so there is alot to
look and and to read. And there is alot you can say.
As far as files go, Eagles has a modest amount of download
material. Here you can find EBBS version 3.0, the version most of
the newer EBBS's are running on right now. They also have lots of
gifs and a large amount of online text that you can download. Eagles'
offers a internet door that has access to a College Football and
Scores server which does a great job.

I find this to be a rather unkown bbs. I havent heard much
about it, but it is a rather nice nice place with some interesting
boards. There are about 148 users on this bbs, which is relatively
low, but the board can only hold 780 max, so thing of it as a small
little hangout. Boards here vary from Death, Venus, and Tabliod and
are mostly sci fi and tech in nature. There is also the option to
vote on this bbs and it has both talk and chat. It is a pretty nice
place if you like small bbs's, but if you love interaction, this isnt
the best of sites.

This is another brand new bbs coming out of Britian. Flux
is just starting to become what is known as a bbs, so anyone interested
in the development of bbs's shold come here and get in on the action.
One of the most active rooms here is Room Ideas, where all users get to
input their thoughts on what kind of rooms Flux should add. Just added
functions include the ability to chat one-on-one with other users and
to change what others see you are thinking about (like a doing).
Flux needs a bit of balancing yet (it has BOTH a Games room and a
Doom Room), so if you have any cool ideas for rooms or enhancements,
this may be the place to go. They haven't added a profile feature yet,
so Flux is rather bare bones. You meet most people through your posts
or just randomly chatting with them. There are only a handful of users
here as well, so Flux could use a little more activity.

Grex is cool. This is an internet access provider that gives
you email, games, conferences, and file options. You can run Grex in
straight command level, menu leve, or even lynx Mosaic level. Grex
is versitale, fun, and free. You do have the option to purchase more
options, such as internet telnet services, if you so desire.
As far as conferences go, Grex has a bunch of them. Grex
offers everything from art to cars. You can post or read what is in
here on the first login. That is the beauty of Grex, you are a
validated user on your first login, and you can do almost anything.
Grex offers internet email at no charge. You can use one of
three types of servers: Mail, elm, or pine. This is cool if you want
to have an extra email address, or if you dont have one in the first
place. The mail server is easy to use and you can send and recieve
from anyone on the internet. And on Grex you can talk to any user
using a typical talk program. You can also join a chat session with
the users.
As far as games go, Grex offers loads of text-based games such
as Nethack, Trek, and Hunt. You can also play chess, backgammon, craps
and more. Grex offers a myraid of games at again no cost. The games
aren't like Doom or anything, but nontheless they are cool, and they
are something you don't see on too many bulletin boards.
Grex is an abbreviated Unix system given out at no charge to
anyone who can access it. If you like what you see at Grex, you might
check out M-Net as well. The two systems, while offering different
programs, are virtually the same in style.

This is the evil brother of ISCA BBS. Heinous has about as
much attitude as it's name implies. Rooms such as Anarchy, Clinton,
and Queer If We Say You're Queer, give Heinous a distinct and
alternative flavor. This place is a lot of fun. Users here are
called lusers, being online is considered "goofing off", and the
atmosphere is light and somewhat altered feel. But usage is extremely
limited. Only 25 users can be online at one time, and most of the
veteran users consider new users a threat rather than a friend.
There are already 1100 active users, and more are flocking in.
Rooms here can disappear and re-appear without notice.
All in all, Heinous is a wild place with crazy rooms and cool
people. If you are looking for something a little different, go online
at Heinous BBS. But if you like speed, lots of talk, and the normal
stuff, you won't like this place much.

This one takes a little effort to get to. When you connect

without the quotes. Then you will get some garbage telling you that
the server is ready and a # prompt. At this type 'call avalon'.
This will give you the login prompt. Type bbs here and you are in.
ICU is a multilingual board. It is sometimes hard to read
the posts unless you know the language. There are 23 boards with a
largely technical flavor to them. ICU also has a files system that
includes alot of technical literature and software. Hidden in this
are some pretty neat gif images as well.
Then there is the ICU Doors command. ICU Doors is a gateway

Tetris, access the ICU World Wide Web homepage, and connect to the

ISCA BBS

Type: DOC
This is the most popular bbs in the world right now.
Literally hundreds of thousands of users have accounts on this
bbs, and the number is growing every day. This bbs is the hub
of the internet when it comes to bulletin boards. It isnt
unlikely to see 900 or so users online during the evening hours.
But there is a downside to all of this activity. One may
expect to see queue lines well into the 100's during times of high
use.
Verification on this is rather strict. To become a
registered user, you must log on as "new" and fill out an online
registration form. ISCA will then check your information and send
a validation "key", or code, to your email address. Then you must
log on with your new user name and password and enter the key.
Until then, you can only have guest privledges. Fortuantely, this
process usually only takes a day or so to be completed, and then you
are a full user. If the user number continues to increase at
current rates, I expect that this bbs will soon run out of space
for new users.
ISCA's high user rate and DOC style setup make it a wonderful
place to make new friends and conduct lively, fast moving discussions.
There are forums (like rooms) for almost any topic. Topics range
from the hilarious Rages forum, where users flame and bitch about
almost anything and anyone (inluding ISCA users), to Serious
Discussions, a forum about just that. Music, Sports, Computers,
Politics, Sexual Issues, and Humor, it's all here. There are even
help forums based on all aspects of the internet. And with all the
users, the conversation never gets dull, and there is always someone
to talk to. Definitely a must see for all users. Be warned though,
things can get rather chaotic here if you have alot of people trying
to talk to you at one time!
If you plan to use ISCA alot, get a copy of the Client if you
can. Client users get priority in the queue line and have a number of
special commands at their access. Information on getting this program
can be found in the Client help forum.

M-Net is a great service that offers Internet email, games,

M-Net has conferences to cover almost any situation, from
computers to cars to games to art, there is a conference for just

neutron.city.ac.uk 138.40.17.1
atom.city.ac.uk 138.40.17.20
proton.city.ac.uk (up sometimes) 138.40.17.2
Monochrome is a great bbs with a huge amount of data. This
is one of the biggest I have seen, and one of the coolest as well.
Monochrome runs on a menu system, and it has alot of features.
Sometimes it is hard to find what you want, cause it is so huge and
it has so many places. But you can get tree of menu contents by
pressing <esc>, <o> and selecting menu list. This is the biggest
funtion for a new user. A word of caution: This is 200 screens long!
Monochrome offers alot of information in the form of text
files and dicussion forums. Science, Arts, Entertainment, Politics,
and many other topics are explored in numerous areas among the menus.
This bbs also offers a bunch of mind and text games to amuse the user,
such as Moringtion Crescent, Sokoban, and Wanderer.
To get on Monochrome as a registered user, you need to mail
the sysops at monoadm@mono.city.ac.uk with subj:new account. In the
body just state that you want a new account and give them your
pertinent information (name, address, phone number, etc) and tell
them the name you want to use on the bbs. You can also do this
online if you wish.

This is a small Citadel bbs based in Arizona. I saw a post
in the Lobby there that said "One Whole Year. 2000 Users. Some of
the more popular and bigger boards blow that number out of the water
by multiples of 10. But Monsoon has got some cool places such as Net
Jeparody! and Anti-Room. But the hardware and programming limitations
on this, like many of its sister Citadel boards, seems to lead this
one to a short life in this new net order. Reading posts in MonSoon
can be done on a bulk basis with a page stop, which makes it easy to
digest a room with a lot of one liners.
If you are a user who is used to lots of interaction and lots
of people, this place will seem like a ghost town. You will notice
when you read the first posts in a room that you are reading posts
from months ago. If you don't like the sound of that, don't go to
Monsoon, cause they don't need the extra load. But if you like that,
go online and find out what Monsoon is all about.

IRC door brings you to a real time IRC chat server. The Fun and
Games door opens a huge wide access area to all sorts of games,
bbs's, and muds. Note though that the bbs is not intended for the
sole use of games and IRC.
There are 18 boards here that cover a number of topics

intelligent conversation and are some of the best I have seen along

movement and not much stale air. The New Hellenic BBS also offers

This is an interesting, graphical interface that gives users
many options that are unseen on other bbs's. OUBBS is a menu driven
system with IBM text graphics. The graphics are optional and tend to
slow the system down. But they do give the bbs a more unique feel.
OUBBS offers file downloads, games, a message system, news and
other information systems, and various other goodies that don't show
up on other bbs's
As far as messaging and information goes, OUBBS has alot to
offer. This bbs offers USA Today News, BoardWatch Magazine, and
the White House Information Base as some of its finer features. These
services are offered free and are readable as you remain online.
There is also a Gopher Client that can allow you to access gophers
worldwide. These features make OUBBS a great information server and
one of the best free services I have seen for this type of information
avaliable.
OUBBS also offers files for both Macintosh and IBM systems
that users can download. From this area you can download texts,
gifs, and other files. There is a huge amount of information to be
had here and is worth a look by anyone who likes to download from
a bbs.
OUBBS also has a chat function much like IRC. Users can set
Their own channels and send private messages to other users using this
function. And the mail menu allows you to send local and internet
mail. And there are also a few games to play during your stay at
OUBBS. This is one useful and cool bbs that I think is worth putting

The entry screen to this bbs says "The People Your Mother
Warned You About". Well, not quite, but it is rather interesting
all the same. Prism is a Citadel bbs divided into floors. Floors
are, like the name implies, are just large gropus of rooms. These
floors are divided up into general topic areas such as Sports and
Computing, and from there the floors are broken up into more
specialized rooms. This peculair setup makes Prism one of the more
interesting bbs's on the net, and it is also one of the more
confusing. Getting around in Prism takes a little more effort.
You can always get help by pressing '?' at the prompt. This will
give you a rather easy to understand help menu with all the topics
included.
I like Prism's topic selection and floors theme. I can
basically select an area that I want to explore and skip around in
those rooms withoutgoing off topic. In a place like NetLife, this
concept works for me because I never get distracted by a room like
Football. This is the trump card for Prism.
Prism's biggest downfall is the small amount of users it can
handle. Only a handful of users (15) can be online at one time, and
there is no queue. So getting here is rather difficult to do. But
once you are here, it is easy to get oriented and to get involved.

I like to call this one "Old Man Citadel". Quartz has been
around since 1989, and yet it still manages to survive in this high
speed, high volume, high tech bbs world. Quartz can only withstand
10 users at one time, a mere flash in the pan when compared to the
giants like ISCA. But this place has what it takes to stay alive.
Quartz has lots of rooms that cover a wide base of topics,
and it seems as if not much is covered. The downside to that is
alot of generalized information and discussion rather than pinpointed
things seen on other bbs's. There is also alot of technology stuff
here. Most of the conversation is interesting and well defined and
rather intelligent; not much seems to be ignorant babble. This is
a fun, tight knit group where you get to meet people and get to know
them well.
Quartz also has a subsystem option that allows you to see
who is online in other places. This is a cool function if you do
a large amount of board hopping and you don't want to log off of
the bbs to find out another one is full.

I once read that Resus was the fastest bbs in the world, and I have to
partially agree - Resus is quick. New boards like this one are always

forums for the majority of programming languages, hacking,
pyrotechinics, system security, and more along those lines. Tacked
onto that is a mild amount of humor and discussion. Try this board
if you need some tech help.
Shadow has a high user amount, but it is limited to a little
over 60 users at one time. This can lead to some pretty hairy queue
lines at times. I have seen queue lines there well up into the 50's
which basically means that almost the whole board has to log off
before the last user can get in. Shadow is also coming rapidly close

This is a British psuedo-pirate bbs. Here you can find a
massive amount of interesting conversation and some all around
pretty cool boards. There are boards such as Alcoholics, Politics,
and DIYSoap, an onging, off the wall story authored by many users.
System 2 mixes fun and seriousness in to one big ball and gives it
to you on a platter. There is even a board for Post Wars if you have
the urge to duke it out with someone using your literary prowess.
You'll find alot of European users on this board, and much of the
discussion is Europe - oriented, Another interesting feature of
the bbs.

If you think the name of this place sounds wild, you are
probably prepared to take on Taz's House. Taz has boards that just
are out there. Boards about Sex and AdultMovies, about Rednecks,
Anarchy, StupidPeople, and the ever sexist Women (described as
"can't live with em.. can't kill em") and Men (described as "come
on women you know we are perfect"). Taz is a funny, borderline
psychotic place with lots of interesting and sometimes cruel chat.
Taz has files and lots of em. This is the largest collection
of files I have seen on a bbs. We are talking everything from
games to windows applications, computer productivity, gifs,
programming languages, FAQ's and much more! There are 58 topic
headings in the files sub menu. If you like getting files on your
bbs, go to Taz' he's got a whole load of them. Some areas of Taz's
files are still under construction though.

This bbs is of foriegn origin. The language presented is
hard to understand, and the message system leaves something to be
desired. UTBBS is more of a ftp server rather than a bbs.

The Vault is a bilingual bbs that deals in both English and
Spanish. Rather small in user size (less than 500), it deals with
mostly jokes and general topics rather than having any specific
discussion. Vault has three main chat rooms that users can access
to carry on dicussion in either language (or both). The Vault
won't offer you alot unless you want to meet international types or
you arent on many other bbs's.

This is a small EBBS. Venus is is a fun place with a high
degree of humor and fluff added to it. Boards such as Erotica,
Dreams, and Sex seem to display the type of audience Venus holds.
Venus also has two boards for expressing greif and anger, Flame
and Bitch. Venus is certainly not technical in nature, but rather
more of a fun place to be. It takes the place of the old hangout,
The Mars Hotel, which went down a short while ago. It currently has
under 500 users, making it small but personal. A lot of fun, but
not much technical or serious discussion. A good place to go for
a fun time.

Type: Hybrid
Viking is a hybrid of a EBBS and the Viking Conferencing
System. Think of it as having all the good features of EBBS with a
new style of screen habitat. Vikings main menu screens have a split
view with a graphical top half and a text bottom half. Viking uses
the concept of power keys to the fullest extent. All major commands
are accessed using power keys, and all menu commands are power keys as
well. The interface is real simple and easy to use, and is one of the
fastest I have seen.
Viking offers a lot of things to the user. Viking offers a
small selection of online games to entertain the user. Simple games
(Mille Bourne, Hangman, and Battlestar for example), yet a nice touch
for a bulliten board of any type. Also, Viking users become part of
a community that may vote on certian topics. Previous topics for
voting have included anonymous posts, displaying information for all
users, and the system's configurations. This is a feature that only
a few other boards have, but more should. It allows the user to get
invovled in the way their system works.
Viking has an immense amount of boards to choose from, covering
the vast realms of religion, art, literature, music, computers,
technology, science, humor, sex, and anger. Viking has a board for
just about anything. And Viking has the user base to keep the boards
going at a rapid rate with alot of movement. This makes the bbs feel
lively and free, energetic.
Viking is much like a community bbs. It makes you feel at
home just logging in. A cool bbs to go to if you like the atmosphere.

FREENETS
Freenets are bbs's that are based on a generally local
setting. Most of them require a registration fee and/or some kind
of mailed verification. Freenets commonly offer internet email,
USA Today news, message systems and posting boards, and sometimes
even games. Almost all freenets are set up the same, with a simple
menu driven setup. Some of them are set up in a city-style theme
where menu options include "The Post Office" or "The Court House".
Here is a list of freenets that can be accessed by users on the net.
Included is the name of the freenet, the host and numerical addresses,
login and password information, information on verification, and what

**Chat Servers and the art of MUSH*
Here is a small list of notable chat and game servers. Most
chat servers are based on a thematic presence (ie medieval, futuristic,
etc), and most are open to anyone who wants an account. Chat servers
often allow you to meet many people and get to know them. You may
take on a role, build your own room, and even explore other rooms
on some of these servers.
Game servers are just that, servers that allow you to play
a number of games. Some offer one type of game, others offer a number
of games to choose from. Check these out if you are looking for
something to do on a rainy day.
I got this list from my friend Nathaniel Moore. I don't know how the
hell he compiled it but he did a great job.
